GRZIMEK Bernhard (Neisse, 24.04.1909 - Franfurt/Main, 13.03.1987). A veterinary surgeon by training, he was director of the Frankfurt am Main Zoological Gardens from 1945 to 1974. An active conservationist, particularly of the Serengeti Park in Tanzania.Typed card signed 20.07.1957 to Herr Münch: "...werde ich ihn gern einmal befolgen ...". ROTHSCHILD Walter2nd Baron de (London, 08.02.1868 - Tring, Buckinghamshire 27.08.1937). Studied at Bonn and Cambridge. He became a great collector and founded the Rothschild Museum of Natural History in London.Autograph letter signed New Court, 28.07.1896. ".. J'aimerai vous demander de lui écrire et de lui demander...". JAN Giorgio(Vienna, 21.12.1791 - Milan, 08.05.1866). An assistant at the University of Vienna, he was appointed professor of botany in Parma. His field was insects and molluscs. He took part in the creation of the Milan Natural History Museum.Autograph letter signed Milan, 11.05.1864 to Louis de Coulon: "...Comme vous voyez de l'avis ci-joint, dorénavant Melle Baillière envoyera directement de Paris ...".BEULE Charles Ernest(Saumur, 29.06.1826 - Paris, 04.04.1874). After studying at the Ecole Normale, he taught at the Ecole française in Athens. He was lucky enough to discover the Propylaea of the Acropolis. His publication made him famous. On his return to France, he was awarded a doctorate in literature and made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. He became interested in politics, which occupied the last years of his life.Eight autograph letters of the celebrated French archeologist. He directed excavations in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Middle East. From 1950 to 1975, as the canton's third archaeologist, he worked part-time on his own, without any technical or administrative support, and was responsible for both the archaeology of the Vaud subsoil and the conservation of historic monuments. He was a great specialist in Nyon porcelain.Typed letter signed Nyon, 29.03.1993 to Alfred Langer: "...Olivier a négligé de payer ses loyers durant quelques mois, avant de commencer à s’inquiéter....".MANGEAT Vincent(Fontenais, 21.04.1941 -). Graduated in architecture from EPFL in 1969. Studied at the Arts et Métiers in Paris. He then taught at the EPFZ, and from 1990 at the EPFL. He is the author of numerous projects for private, public and institutional programmes.Autograph dedication and sketch signed, Nyon, 24.11.1989 to AL (Rotary Club).MERCIER Julien(27.12.1912 - 03.1999). After studying to be an architect, he came to socialism through the magazine "Esprit". He realised that the cooperative system was the closest to Christianity. In 1945, the housing shortage was very severe in Yverdon. Although he was the father of 4 children, he took the risk of leaving his job, setting up on his own and starting to build small individual houses for workers as a Société Coopératve d'Habitation. He was chairman of the buildings committee of the Free Church of Vaud.Typed letter signed Yverdon, 20.10.1956 to Mme Paul Langer: "... il a ainsi pour une large part contribué au bien matériel de notre commission...".NICATI Pierre(1892 - Vevey, 1975). A renowned architect, Pierre Nicati was associated with Adolphe Burnat. He was involved in Nestlé's Alimentarium in Vevey and was responsible for installing the organ in the St Martin temple in Vevey.Autograph letter signed Berne, 26.12.1924 to his godfather Pastor Bugnon: "...Berne ...où je passe les fêtes de fin d'année..."; envelope.BARBEY Auguste Agénorson of William (Chambésy, 11.03.1872 - Montcherand, 27.08.1948). Renowned entomologist. Forestry engineer. In the early 20th century, he restored the Château de Montcherand, where he assembled a collection of local artefacts. Numerous scientific publications. Honorary doctorate from the EPFZ.Photograph; Autograph card signed 13.10.35 reporting on a meeting; Autograph letter signed 28.08.35 on the administrative conduct of the Church; Visiting card from his widow; one bearer share.
