Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 CE. A tall standing bichrome pottery female cuchimilco (or star-gazer). The figure stands upon a pair of broad feet and delineated legs with subtle genitalia, and outstretched arms with stylized fingers project from the broad, black-painted chest. The sizable, flat face is dominated by areas of black pigment emphasizing her cheeks, eyes, and eyebrows which surround a triangular nose, with a tall brow capped with a strip of stippled and zigzag motifs beneath a solid black band. A beautiful example of pottery artistry which exemplifies the artistic prowess of the Chancay culture. Size: 7.5" W x 10.25" H (19 cm x 26 cm).
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-collection of Drs. Saul Tuttman & Gregory Siskind, New York, USA, acquired between 1960s and 1970s

Condition
Head reattached to body with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, roughness across most surfaces, fading to some areas of black pigmentation, and chips to hands, feet, body, and head. Large but stable pressure fissure on back of head. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout. Old inventory numbers on back of head, near one foot, and underneath one foot in black ink, and one old inventory sticker beneath foot.
