Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1189 BCE. A rare piece of ancient wood, preserved by Egypt's arid climate, carved by hand into a mummiform shape to form an ushabti. Shabti (or ushabti) dolls are figures shaped like adult male or female mummies wearing traditional ancient Egyptian headdresses. The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. Size: 2.15" W x 7.7" H (5.5 cm x 19.6 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Surface is weathered, but form is still clear. Dark patina from age and handling. Small, old losses from feet. Old typed French label on base with collection number.
