Description
Anatolia, Turkey, 3rd millennium BCE. A very ancient, rare, twin-handled pottery jar covered in deep black slip and decorated with punched dotted linear designs on both faces and underneath each handle. The central design on each face has an avian form, with curved wings and profile beak. This lovely blackware vessel was created in ancient Anatolia, a geographic region that formed a significant link at the point where the continents of Europe and Asia meet, home to Indo-Europeans who shared a common language and culture, a crossroads from the beginning of civilization for many ancient peoples who were migrating or conquering either continent. Size: 4.5" W x 3.5" H (11.4 cm x 8.9 cm)
