Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan colonies, ca. 3rd century BCE. A delightful ceramic representation of a standing, pigeon-like bird. The bird has a long body, short legs, and a relatively small head with a short, sharp beak. The remains of pigment on the body - white, black, and red - give an idea of how brightly it would once have been painted. Pigeons (doves) were incredibly popular in the classical world - for example, Pliny records a "mania" for pigeons, with people constructing elaborate dovecotes (columbaria) atop their houses to keep the birds. Size: 3.3" W x 2.25" H (8.4 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.1" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
