Greek Canosan Terracotta Nike Figure
Greek Canosan Terracotta Nike Figure
Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful mold-made figure of Nike - the winged goddess of victory, speed, and strength - wrapped in a flowing robe with cascading drapery folds, wings projecting backward from the figure, holding a patera in her left hand, the surface adorned with white pigment. Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. The artisans produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decorative style (although not in form) from earlier and neighboring traditions. Size: 4" W x 9" H (10.2 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: private Carlton Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
