Description
Italy, Campania, Tarentum, 281 BCE to 228 BCE. OBVERSE: Head of nymph left, wearing head band and triple pendant earring. REVERSE: Nude youth on horseback right, crowning horse that raises left foreleg; dolphin behind, lion to right below horse, TA below hoof. Vlasto 1020; SNG ANS 1292; HN Italy 1098. Size 7.03 grams, 20 mm.
Tarentum has a long and comprehensive history that dates back to 706 BCE when the Spartans established it as a Greek Colony. The city was located on the south eastern portion of the peninsula on what is commonly referred to as the "heal" of the Italian boot. Today, Taranto as it is known as by the Italians, is a modern city built atop the ancient city that was constructed by the Greeks many centuries ago.
