Greek, colony of Canosa, southeastern Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. Lovely Greek pottery "false oinochoe." Non-functioning vessel that was almost certainly created for the tomb of a wealthy Greek living in the colony of Canosa. Large white-slipped vessel with the head a goddess forming the body of the vessel. She looks forward wearing laurel wreath, large ear spools, hair showing in front, two larger laurel leaves at base, showing much of the original red, blue, white and pink pigment. Above her stands another full female figure standing contrapposto, wearing long himation, head also adorned with a crown of laurel leaves - this with added ink and white pigment. Long arching handle connects from the back of the lower goddess' head to just behind the standing female figure. A very nice example of the type! Size: 6" W x 14.5" H (15.2 cm x 36.8 cm)
