Catalogue Note: Born in South Carolina, De Lancey Walker Gill (1859-1940) is usually identified with the Washington, DC area, his primary place of residence. Largely self-taught, Gill worked as an illustrator and photographer for various governmental agencies, including the U. S. Geological Survey and the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology, having served at the latter as the Director of illustration for over forty years. The present example demonstrates the artist's subtle skills as a watercolorist.
