Catalogue Note: George E. Cooke (1793-1849) was an itinerant portrait, historical, and landscape painter during the second quarter of the 19th century who travelled extensively throughout the Southeast in search of commissions. Born in Maryland, Cooke studied with Charles Bird King in Washington, D. C. before venturing out on his own. Recorded in various locations across the Southeast, Cooke is known to have worked in New Orleans starting in 1844.
