Description
1878 Flowers Their Origin JE Taylor Illustrated Botany Plants DARWIN Evolution
John Ellor Taylor’s ‘Flowers; Their Origin’ is a late 19th-century botanical survey designed for the general public. Taylor covers a variety of topics including – origins of flowers, extinction of plants, use of flowers in both religion and science, geological records of flowers and insects, the natural distribution of flowers and seeds, the biological structures of flowering plants, coloration in flowers, and the natural defenses of plants.
This fine work features 8 impressive full-page color engravings of various flowers along with dozens of in-text woodcut illustrations. This work became quite popular during the 1870s, much in part to the radical change from Charles Darwin’s views laid out in ‘Origin’. Taylor developed a “‘new philosophy of flowers’ asserting that flowers were not created for the delight and use of humans but had evolved.” (Smith, p.161). It was in ‘Flowers’ that Taylor sought to present a ‘clearer conception of Creational Power and Wisdom.’
