Description
1875 Civil War SLAVERY Negro Songs Hampton Institute Black Americana Illustrated

M.F. Armstrong’s ‘Hampton and its Students’ is a late 19th-century account on the history of Hampton University, a historically black university in Virginia. This work includes first-hand stories from students and faculty, as well as illustrations of various parts of the school including a Negro cabin in Hampton.

Following the Civil War, there was a demand for freed slaves seeking education. Hampton Institute provided that service and kept many slaves from being returned to their slave owners who sought to reclaim them.
