Thomas Higginson was a 19th-century American soldier who is best remembered for his work as an abolitionist. Following his years in the Civil War, Higginson wrote a book based on his experience as the colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers – the first recognized black regiment. This book, ‘Army Life in a Black Regiment’, recounts the role of black soldiers, influences of slavery on the Civil War, and captures the dialect and verses from Negro spirituals sung around the war camp grounds.
