Mid 19th century, 144 x 113 cm, North West Anatolia, Provinz Çanakkale

Published by Brüggemann/Böhmer as early as 1980, this rare niche carpet is from Avunya, a small town in the Dardanelle region which was renamed "Ezine" in 1923 upon the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. A large red-ground mihrab enclosing two smaller, white and blue mihrab frames with hooked arches takes up almost the whole of the field. The green section above the arch, which is topped with stems and flowers, is decorated with tiny cruciform blossoms. The most striking feature is the colourful rosettes resembling rotating windmills in the main border. – Both ends and the sides have been repiled, and the field and border contain further repiled areas.
