Description
Pair of Roman terracotta counterfeiter/forger’s moulds, Late Constantinian era, c. AD 340 - 360, both with an impression from the obverse of a Centenionalis of Constantius II (AD 337 - 361), son of Constantine I ‘The GreatÂ’, showing the imperial portrait. The rest bear Centenionalis reverse impressions of two types, each with the same legend ‘FEL TEMP REPARATIOÂ’, one depicts a Roman soldier spearing a fallen enemy horseman, the second depicts the emperor standing in a galley piloted by Victory. The mintmark are all clear and visible indicating the molded coins were all struck at Antioch, in Roman Syria, except one which was struck in the eastern imperial capitol Constantinople. Each is finely detailed with light earthen deposits. Diameter about 1 1/8 in (3 cm) each. Ex Princeton Economics collection acquired by Martin Armstrong; Ex Classical Numismatic Group.
