Description
Extremely Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Log Cabin with Raccoon Bank, Inscribed "D G / aug(?) 29 / 1852", attributed to Thomas Haig, Jr., Philadelphia, PA, 1852, molded in the form a log cabin with four windows, two doors, a cider keg at each end, and a molded and applied figure of raccoon. An open door in one end of the cabin forms the coin slot. Surface decorated with heavy yellow-slip spots and highlights, as well as accents of copper and manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside incised with inscription, "D G / aug(?) 29 / 1852". Produced by Thomas Haig, Jr. to commemorate William Henry Harrison's Whig Party candidacy for U.S. President in 1840. One of a few redware examples of this form known. Provenance: A recently-discovered example. Losses to base. Restoration to raccoon's head and crack in raccoon's back. Fully-restored chimneys. Significant restoration to base. Restoration to door. L 4" ; W 3 1/2"; H 4 1/2".
