  • Excellent content diary from New England. Hard cover journal measures 8" x 10", and has approximately 300 pages of entries, fine. The entires cover June 1864 - 1867, then start again in 1874. On the inside Cover is the name Margarett and George Willis, and the name Willis is mentioned throught the diary. The diary mentions traveling to Boston, Concord, Maine, and other New England areas. The dirary contains day to day life....Cooking, farming, going to church, etc. There is also some exceptional historical content, pertaining to events during the Civil War, starting in June 1864...."June 2....The war news is good. This has been our election day.....". "June 6....Sent a bottle of tomatoe catsup & a jar of pickles to the soldiers, as the ladies were sending a box to them. I did not attend the meeting, but is was said it was a splendid box, and may it do the poor soldiers good....". "July 4....the children had a display of fireworks....". "September 19....We expect to go to Concord to attend the United States Convention....". "September 20....In the evening we went to a conference meeting at the church, it was fully attended. They seem to be very much engaged in the good cause of religion....". "October 22....We passed a quiet day, just as we wished to. I read the Life of Mr. Lincoln & other good books....". "November 8....This has been our election day. Lincoln is to be our next President, he had 203 votes in this town....". "February 22, 1865....This is the anniversary of Washingtons birthday. Bells ringing, guns firing, a real holly day for many people in Boston....". "April 14....Oh! What horrid news we have had, our President is no more....". "April 15....The horrid news we had last night. Our President was assassinated while in Ford's Theatre, Washington. his wife was by his side, unharmed. Oh! what gloom this news will throw over the country (Johnson Inaugurated)....". " April 19....Our President was buried, there were services in many towns throughout the U. States, a great deal of mourning....". (April 19 was actually his funeral in Washington, DC, and not his burial.) "May 14....Heard the news of the capture of Jeff Davis, the Rebel President, this is good news....". "May 17....Jeff Davis was captured in his wife's dress & his wife children & several of his cabinet with him....". "June 1....This is the National Fast....". "July 4....This is Independence Day....". "july 19....Mr. Willis got his Barley by changing work with Negroes Davis and Johnson....". "December 7....This was our Nations Fast appointed by our President....". A great diary.
