Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating, brightly painted woven panel in the form of a mythological beast. Made by weaving cane over a wooden frame, it includes two tail-like projections, one from either long side, and then four arms, each with five long fingers (oneis missing a finger), creating a headless, symmetrical figure. The body is made of curves and loops nested around each other. The center of the figure is a long, ovoid torso. White, red, bright yellow, and black/grey earth-based pigments give this piece an exciting, playful appearance. Made to be a decorative panel celebrating a triumph. Size: 36.4" W x 36.8" H (92.5 cm x 93.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
