Roman Empire, Nero, Rome, 54 CE to 68 CE. OBVERSE: Laureate head of Nero facing right, inscription around. REVERSE: Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory and spear, shields on ground, S C in field, Roma in exergue. s. RIC 335. Size: 28.12 grams, 33 mm.
One of the so-called "12 Caesars", the coins of Nero are highly sought after whether it be coins struck in gold, silver or as this example, in bronze. Collecting the 12 Caesars encompasses collecting coins that begin with Julius Caesar and go through the next 11 Roman Emperors in order of reign and ending with Domitian. Nero is certainly one of the best known of all of the emperors in this select group.
