Description
Byzantine Empire, Justinian I, ca. 527 to 565 CE, type of 527 to 538 CE. Constantinople Mint. Obverse: DNIVSTINI - ANVSPPAVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust 3/4 to right. Reverse: VICTORI AVG CCC A, in exergue, CONOB. Angel standing facing, holding globus cruciger and long cross; star to right. D.O. 3a. Known as Justinian the Great, during his reign, Justinian is noted as trying to revive the empire's greatness and reconquer the lost western half of the historical Roman Empire. Unfortunately, his ambition to restore the Roman Empire to its former glory was only partly realized. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 4.4 grams
