Description
Robert E. Lee Fort La Fayette Quarterly Report Signed "RE Lee Capt Insp". Two large pages contemporarily adhered together at edge to create one large sheet, 30.75" x 9.75", Fort Hamilton, New York; July 31, 1843. A Quarterly Report of the conditions of fortifications and disbursements at Fort La Fayette, certified by Lee as correct. The report includes details of the brick and stone masonry, carpentry, smithery, and hired labor, as well as the totals of the cash account.
Lee was promoted to first lieutenant of Engineers in October 1836. He had been serving as an assistant to the chief engineer's office in D.C., but his supervising work took him to St. Louis and Mississippi. His engineering project work on the Mississippi earned him a promotion to captain. In 1842, Captain Lee was posted to Fort Hamilton to serve as post engineer.
Condition:Â Flattened folds, with some separations at intersections where weakness occurred. Light toning along folds, else very good. Boldly signed by Lee in blue ink.
