18th (can be as early as 17th) century iron Japanese sword tsuba inlaid with three brass kirin galloping among rocks and wispy clouds, all surrounded with gold inlaid keyfret border. Kirin, is a mythical creature and are said to appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a just ruler. There are several subspecies, most have the body of a deer with dragon scales, the head of the dragon (usually with 1 horn) and the tail of a lion. The ones shown on this tsuba have the carapace of a turtle on their backs. Rare subject, beautiful design with dynamic postures, excellent metalwork - see the detailing of their faces and bodies, rock and cloud shapes, wonderful gilding with some wear, great feel of age to the piece. Height 3 1/8 inches.
