Description
STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER-PRINTED CERAMIC PLATES, LOT OF TEN, each having red transfer design of "Palestine" pattern, comprising two cup plate examples, four 6" D examples, and four 8 1/2" examples. Each with impressed "ADAMS" mark to base except for one 8 1/2" D example, eight examples with printed "PALESTINE" mark. William Adams IV & Sons, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Second quarter 19th century. 4" to 8 1/2" D.
Five pieces undamaged; one 6" D example with area of professional restoration to rim; one 8 1/2" D example and one 6" D example each with a small glaze flake to rim; one 8 1/2" D example with a hairline; one cup plate with a flake to outer rim. One example with two glazed manufacturing impressions to rim, as made.
Literature: Transferware Collectors Club database pattern #2161.
Provenance: De-accessioned from the Reeves Collection, Washington and Lee University, and sold to benefit the Acquisitions Fund for all of the material.
