Catalogue Note: Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, artist Jiang Tie Feng (b. 1938) worked for much of his early career under the strict direction of the Communist government, producing propaganda posters and the like. Laboring secretly during this period to develop his own style apart from that sanctioned by his government overseers, Jiang Tie Feng and other artists helped to establish what became known as the Yunnan School, whose works often feature bold color and abstract imagery. Feng came to the U. S. in 1983 on an exchange program to teach at the University of Southern California and has remained since.
