Description
WARREN E. COX (AMERICAN, B. 1895) CHINESE-INSPIRED BRONZE SCULPTURE, a bold depiction of a mythical, rhinoceros-like beast based on pre-historic Chinese prototypes, stamped to underside of torso "WARREN E. COX / PAT APPL'D FOR / NEW YORK". Retains a rich patina with elements of verdigris. Circa 1945. 8" HOA, 12 1/2" LOA.
Excellent overall condition.
Provenance: From a Charlottesville, VA estate.
Catalogue Note: Warren Earle Cox (1895-1976) was an influential artist, designer, author, and art / antiques dealer during the second and third quarters of the 20th century. In addition to serving as the Art Director for Encyclopedia Britannica, Cox maintained a gallery in Manhattan, where he specialized in early Chinese porcelain and pottery. The prototype of the present example is featured prominently in Cox's seminal 1944 work, "The Book of Pottery and Porcelain", pp. 93-98, where it is described as a "Triceratops-like form", possibly inspired by the discovery of dinosaur bones near Mongolia during the prehistoric period.
