Virgilio Ripari (Italy, 1843 - 1902) Italian coastal scene. Signed lower right. Oil/Canvas. Sight Size: 11.75 x 23.5 in. Overall Size: 16.25 x 28.5 in. Among his admirers was Queen Victoria of England, for whom he executed several oil paintings and watercolors. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy including the Milan Exhibitions of 1872, 1883, and 1886; the Torino Exhibition of 1884; and the Venice Exhibition of 1887. The romantic and decadent themes typical of his era, characterize many of his paintings. The subject matter of his paintings includes nuns, family, gallant compositions, Renaissance scenes in period costumes, flowers, and landscapes, particularly of the canals in Venice, for which he is best known.
