Description
Virgilio Ripari (Italy, 1843 - 1902) 10" x 20" oil on canvas Venetial Street Scene. Signed, "Ripari" lower right. Virgilio Ripari was born in the province of Mantlia, Lombardy, Italy. He attended the Academia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan and studied uner Guseppe Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi. Ripari soon distinguished himself for his ability and hard work that earned him numerous awards. Among his admirers was Queen Victoria of England, for whom he executed several oil paintings and watercolors. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy. Ripari painted with bright colors which he placed on the canvas jaggedly, in fast touch. For many years Ripari suffered from arthritis pain that made it extremely difficult to paint; however, that did not prevent him from continuing to work. Virgilio Ripari died in Milan on April 11, 1902 at the age of 58.
