Description

Chippendale-Style Mahogany Four-Post Canopy Bed

ca. 1900, with a carved, paneled headboard and matching footboard, with tapered cluster-column posts supporting the shaped and carved canopy.
h. 108", inside w. 64", l. 84", outside w. 74", l. 94"

Condition

In overall very good condition. The old, probably original, surface exhibits normal scattered dings, abrasions and indications of age and use. Overall, the finish is in very good condition. There are a few chips and flakes to the edges of the carved surfaces. There is a shallow splinter loss to the molding at the top edge of the footboard, about 1-1/2" long and 1/4" wide. There is a hole on the foot end of one side rail, just over the bed bolt, about 1" x 1/2". On the bottom of each rail is gadrooning. On each, there is a straight line void, about 3" long, at the end of the rail where it meets the headpost. There appears to be a missing piece of carving at its lamination line. No tester upholstery is present.
