Description
Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba Culture, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A wonderfully vibrant and striking wooden headdress skillfully carved to depict a beautiful bird in the round with incised plumage and painted in vibrant red, black, and white hues - perched upon a caplike form that is perforated around the rim, presumably for attaching ornaments or a costume. Birds have a special significance to the Yoruba, representing the triumph of good over evil. What's more, Osanyin is a Yoruba bird deity associated with medicine and divination. Size: 19.5" L x 8.625" H (49.5 cm x 21.9 cm)

Provenance: private Omer Claiborne collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; acquired over the last 40 years
