Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A petite yet beautiful opaque glass phallic-form pendant of a black hue wrapped with slender canes of red-orange glass around the main body. The pendant is comprised of a short shaft, a conical tip, and a pair of bulbous testes surmounted by a small suspension loop. Phalluses are common Roman symbols of strength, fertility, and virility and, when depicted disembodied like this example, were used as what Pliny wrote of as a "medicus invidiae" to ward against the evil eye. Size: 1.25" L x 0.3" W (3.2 cm x 0.8 cm).
