Description

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous cast bronze patera in excellent condition and with a pretty patina. A long handle projects from one side of the shallow, round bowl, which has a rounded rim that rolls out over the edge of the bowl. The bowl stands on a round foot and has multiple rings of incised concentric circles on its interior and exterior. The handle is elegant and straplike, with two rounded projections at each terminal. A curved hook on the underside of the handle may have allowed this item to be hung over the side of a vessel or on a wall. The weight of this patera is pleasing in the hand. The patera was an offering dish, used to pour libations and to make sacrifices using wine and other liquids. Some may also have been used for serving food at symposia. Size: 9.4" L x 4.95" W x 1.85" H (23.9 cm x 12.6 cm x 4.7 cm)
