Description
ALEXANDER SPENCE (Scottish 18th Century) A GEORGE III PERIOD STERLING SILVER HOT WATER URN, CIRCA 1808-1809, the rounded rectangular urn with conforming domed lid and cast ball finial, bands of gadrooned decoration at the neck lip and neck frame a wide band of engraved interlaced foliate decoration, at each side a pair of cast and chased lion's heads issuing partially reeded curved "D" shape handles, the sway belly of the reservoir engraved to the front and back with the Arms of NcNeill of Colonsay and Gronsay, near the bottom front of the reservoir a faceted spout with lever mechanism and mahogany urn form knob, raised on four partially reeded curved legs with hairy paw feet attached to an in curved rectangular plinth with engraved guilloché band on the top and gadrooned border at the edge, the plinth fitted with a rectangular urn form spirit burner, the whole raised on four ball feet, marked (three towers), (thistle), (duty), "AS," "c," "215," total approximate silver weight: 159.35 troy ounces. Height: 19 1/4" Width: 11 3/4" Depth: 12 3/4"
Condition
In overall fair condition with evidence of prior restoration/repair, the ball form finial possibly a replacement or reattached original, minor dent along lip of the lid, minor denting to reeding on handles, both front legs with evidence of resoldering, the mahogany knob possibly a replacement or has experienced shrinkage over time, the ball feet possibly reattached, the spirit burner is slightly misshapen with evidence of restoration along the rim together with hammer marks.
