Description

A FRENCH SECOND EMPIRE STYLE CAST BRONZE FIREPLACE SCREEN, CIRCA 1860-1880, the rectangular screen with rounded upper corners with double cast bronze frame centered by double ended fleur-de-lys issuing from pierced quatrefoil centered straps at the sides with the addition of pierced ocular centered straps in alternation at the top, bottom, and wrapping the corners, at the top a twisted shaft handle with reticulated ogee form ends, overlapped by a shaped strap pierced by a quatrefoil with pendant acanthus scrolls and elaborate reticulated ogee form finial plate, over a strap work based griffin mask with twisted ring between it's teeth, backed with framed mesh, raised on canted Greek key form feet on casters. Height: 29" Width: 41 7/8" Depth: 7 1/4"

Condition

In overall fair condition, the bronze with traces of gilding; screws missing; one element lacking; mesh stretched and ripped.
