Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. Two charming cast bronze attachments, each in the form of an animal head, highlighting the importance of animals to the Roman world. One is a lioness with a snarling visage. The other is a ram with a long snout and striated horns that lie along his head. Probably used to decorate furniture, both pieces have round openings on their backs for attachment. Size of largest (ram): 1.6" L x 1.15" W x 0.65" H (4.1 cm x 2.9 cm x 1.7 cm); 2.95" H (7.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Attractive mottled patinas on surfaces. The back of the cat appears to have lost its attachment ring; the ram is intact.
