Syria, Seleucid Kingdom, Demetrius II, 1st reign, 145 BCE to 140 BCE, struck 140 BCE. OBVERSE: Diademed and draped bust right. REVERSE: Eagle standing left on prow, palm over shoulder; club left. Compare SNG Spaer 1673. Size: 13.46 grams, 24 mm.
Demetrius II was called Nicator; the Greek translation is "the Victor", Nicator was one of the sons of Demetrius I Soter, and the brother of Antiochus VII. Demetrius II ruled the Seleucid Empire during two periods that were separated by a number of years of captivity in Hyrcania in Parthia.
