Greece, Kings of Macedon, Philip II, ca. 359 to 336 BCE. AR Tetradrachm (11.3 grams). Laureate head of Zeus right / FILIP-POU, youth on horseback right, crowning horse with palm; * below raised leg. CP. Le Rider pl. 44, 20. Obverse struck off center. Size: 1.05" W (2.7 cm)
The youth on horseback commemorates the victory of young Philip II's racehorse at the Olympic Games of 356 BCE - the same year that Philip's son Alexander (soon to be the Great) was born.
Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
