Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a prominent English poet of the Victorian era. She was quite popular in both England and America during her lifetime and was a major inspiration to American poets such as Edgar Allen Poe and Emily Dickinson.

“Aurora Leigh” is an epic poem in novel form. It is a first-person narration from the point of view of Aurora. Browning styled the poem "a novel in verse" and referred to it as "the most mature of my works, and the one into which my highest convictions upon Life and Art have entered."

A lovely First American edition is divided into nine separate books. Books 1-5 contain a narrative of Aurora’s childhood and the remaining sections depict Aurora at her present age. This poem is notable for its role in promoting the position of women in society.
