Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Currier & Ives (American, 1834-1907), "Trotting Stallion Patron." 1887. A separately issued hand-colored lithograph by "America’s printmakers" depicting a mustachioed and goateed gentleman dressed in a blue jacket, white pants, and blue riding cap riding a horse-drawn cart - holding the reigns and a whip. The image is action-packed, as all four legs of the horse appear to be aloft in the winter air, its black mane flowing behind as they race. The text below reads, "Trotting Stallion Patron Record 2:14 1/4"" Size: sheet measures 16.625" L x 13.5" W (42.2 cm x 34.3 cm); 15.875" L x 19" W (40.3 cm x 48.3 cm) in portfolio

From 1834 to 1907, the firm of Nathaniel Currier and (after 1856) Currier & Ives (American, 1834-1907) provided for the American people a wide and varied gallery of prints for the new mass market of middle class society. The firm was the most successful American popular printmaker, issuing over 8,000 different prints. Their success was the result of their good business sense and their accurate instincts of what the American public wanted. Their images have become classics, capturing the life and times of nineteenth century America.
