Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, Justin I, ca. 518 to 527 CE. Constantinople Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: D N IVSTI - NVS P P AVC. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust 3/4 to right. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVCCC B. Angel standing facing, holding long cross and globus cruciger, star in field right, in exergue, CONOB. Under the Byzantine emperor Anastasius I, Justin became commander of the palace guard, with the title of count. Upon the death of Anastasius I in July 518, Justin became emperor. Justin I was a champion of Christian orthodoxy. He was the uncle and predecessor of the great emperor Justinian. Sear 56. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 4.5 grams
