Williams, Elizabeth, (American 1844 - 1889), Still Life of Flowers Near Window, circa 1870 in Paris, oil on canvas, 30 x 20.5 inches, framed in a period gold cove style frame measuring 36 x 26 inches, Provenance: By descent through the family to the current great grand niece, framed in a gilded wood oval frame measuring 24 x 20 inches , Elizabeth William was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1844. Williams studied in Paris under Aime Nicholas Morot and, while there, exhibited at the Salon. She came to San Francisco in 1873 and during her last 16 years maintained a residence at 120 Sutter Street with her mother. A spinster, she died of consumption at the home of artist Raymond Yelland in East Oakland on July 25, 1889. Her rare works include portraits and still lifes. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1873-89; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1876-78, 1888; Snow & May's Gallery (SF), 1878; Morris & Kennedy Gallery (SF), 1880. CD; SF Examiner, 7-27-1889 (obit). This lot is an excellent example of a 19th Century female American painter. Little opportunity existing for female painters and even fewer travelled to study in France. Typically marrying marked the end of any career as a painter.

in good condition apart from planar distortion and some inconsistencies to the varnish layer
