Item Details
Description
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) Attributed: Gauche on carton board, signed lower left, stamped verso with the stamp of Dr. Gachet and his son. Vincent Van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes.

Vincent Van Gogh painted three authenticated oil versions of his Bedroom in Arles, now held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musee D Orsay in Paris respectively and two sketches, one sent to his brother, Theo, and the other to Paul Gauguin . This study bears many striking similarities to Van Gogh’s first two oil versions of the composition.

Much of the furniture included in this painting are rendered in a similar matter as the authenticated versions. The bed, with its deep red comforter, gently tousled pillows, and sinuous frame, is remarkably similar to the bed found in the first oil painting. Additionally, the green in the mirror, towel, and chair cushions is an identical shade to Van GoghÂ’s first bedroom composition and are rendered in Van GoghÂ’s signature style. The nightstand and the assortment of goods sitting on it are nearly identical to those in version two. The paintings hung on the wall, the left Van Gogh’s portrait of Eugene Boch and the right his portrait of Paul Eugene Milliet, are also found in version two.

This guache on cartonboard study of Vincent Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles bears a cat stamp used by Dr. Paul Gachet, Van Gogh’s physician in Auvers-sur-Oise after his hospitalization and patron of many influential late nineteenth-century artists, and his son, Paul-Louis Gachet.

While other iterations of this painting remain unsigned, this work bears a signature of Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh would only sign works he intended to sell with a small, inconspicuous Vincent on the composition. "Size: 12.25 x 15.5"
