Description
The full-length mirror of the title (sugatami in Japanese), is a large mirror which reflects the full-length of the body, but in this design only the upper half of a young woman is shown reflected. Judging by the slight hint of portraiture in her features and the crest on her robe she can be identified as Naniwaya Okita. This composition is structured around the conceit of showing the face and the back of the head simultaneously. From the title it can be deduced that originally a series of seven prints was planned, but at present only this one design is known.
Kitagawa Utamaro (1750-1806) was a Japanese artist who was considered the prominent ukiyo-e artist of the late 18th century. His early work focused on actor portraits and theater programs. He gained immense fame for his single portraits of idealized females in his beautiful women series.
