Western Africa, Mali, Malinke / Bamana peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A well-preserved, hand-carved sculpture of a woman, standing with her long arms reaching down to her knees, in a slight squat. She has a prominent belly button and breasts, perhaps indicating pregnancy. Her face is nicely carved, with a tall crest of incised hair. Figures like these are often given to women at puberty and during engagement and marriage ceremonies, used to symbolize the ability to have children. Size: 1.45" W x 6.65" H (3.7 cm x 16.9 cm); 7.45" H (18.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Inactive insect losses on foot and one inner thigh. Small loss on top of head. Nice dark patina from age and handling with excellent detail remaining.
