Prehistoric Mimbres Corrugated Bowl
Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Southwestern US, Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. A bowl of the Mimbres corrugated style, with a smooth, matte black interior, and a finely corrugated, grey exterior. This is a rare shape of vessel, with its decorated rim extending into the geometric design of the rest of the bowl; the lower part of the exterior is undecorated. The Mimbres people occupied the mountain and river valleys of southwestern New Mexico; the name we know them by is from the Spanish word for the willows that grew alongside the river valleys. The artists responsible for creating pottery vessels like this were women, and many women have been found in burials accompanied by pottery making tools. Size: 6.95" W x 3.55" H (17.7 cm x 9 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
