This is a very rare hand-carved wooden face mask with vibrant painted detailing made by the Ijo Tribe, Nigeria. Created in the western area of Nigeria where realistic masks in the form of fish or animals were known. It was worn on the forehead. This mask was actually used in tribal ceremonies and was not made for public sale. Part of the ex-Bernie Brown Collection and donated in 1971 to the Denver Art Museum. The museum is one of the largest art museums between the West Coast and Chicago. The mask is 17”H x 8.75”W x 5.75”D and in EXCELLENT condition. It shows some paint loss and rubs associated with actual tribal use. Purchased 14+ years ago from the Art Museum Source and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
