Description

The Queen’s Plate is Canada’s oldest thoroughbred horse race, having been found- ed in 1860. It is also the oldest continuously run race in North America. It is run at a distance of 1.25 miles for a maximum of 17 three-year-old thoroughbred horses foaled in Canada. The race takes place each summer, in June or July, at Woodbine Racetrack, Etobicoke, Ontario, and is the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown. In 1861 Ben Alcott rode the Wild Irishman in for the win with a time of 2:00. The train- er was George Cameron and the owner was George Henderson. This historic tintype has Ben wearing an ornate ‘spanish inspired’ dress uniform posing in front of an impressive uside down horseshoe though we can expect that Ben wasn’t worried about luck. The horseshoe is decorated in flowers. Ben has been very subtly hand-tinted. The image is housed in a full case with both working clasps.Spine has been retaped. The image has been resealed and the information regard- ing the subject has been recorded by a contemporary hand signed and dated. 3.25 in. x 3.75 in.
