Item Details
Description
John James Audubon (Haitian/American, 1785-1851), "American Plarmigan and White-Tailed Grous," 1838, hand-colored plate, No. 84, Plate CCCCXVIII, Havell edition, printed on a J. Whatman watermarked paper, with a Sotheby's lot sticker attached lower left, unframed, presented in a protective plastic sleeve, H.- 25 1/8 in., W.- 38 in.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age. There are approximately eleven paper tears around border of print. Four of these tears have tape on the back, which was not acid free because it has discolored the area to a dark brown. It seems some water or other liquid got on the bottom right corner of the paper. The back of the print shows a ghost image of another Audubon print, which was a transfer from not properly conserving these items. A previous consignor most likely had it stacked on top of another print without acid-free paper to protect between them and caused the image to transfer. The same ghost image that is visible on back shows through slightly, primarily on right side of middle print. The primary print does not show signs of damage or discoloration. The top corners show pinholes from being hung on a wall at some point without a frame. Please reference photos for full understanding of above condition report. Regardless of all these things, this is a very handsome Havell edition print. ________________________________________________________________________________ ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD "AS IS."
