Description
Ancient Near East, Sasanian Empire, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A striking example of glass artistry from the last Persian empire before the rise of Islam during a crucial period in history. The body of the vessel - comprised of translucent aubergine glass - presents a piriform body with a short, very narrow, cylindrical neck rising to a flared rim. Six slightly concave roundels of deep purple or wine hued glass applied in a staggered manner to the exterior walls create an attractive pattern, and the entire vessel sits upon a base made from a slightly larger roundel of rich violet coloration. This type of vessel would have been used to hold perfume or another precious liquid that would have otherwise been subject to evaporation. Size: 2.875" H (7.3 cm)
