Provenance:
Property of a private collector, Edinburgh (1938-2021).
The aubergine glass jug acquired from John Cummings Ltd, Grantham, Lincolnshire, 26 May 1994.

The purple ribbed jug with trefoil mouth and applied handle and trailing in contrasting light green glass, is a feature of glass made in Syro-Palestine in the 4th Century AD, although the body of this jug is most unusual for its squat form. For a more slender jug in the Newark Museum of Art, cf Susan Auth, Ancient Glass at the Newark Museum from the Eugene Schaefer Collection of Antiquities, Newark 1976, p.107, no.122, col.pl. on p.183.
