Rare 1869 Postally Used Cover with Integral Letter Mailed From San Francisco to Paris / Calais France Scott #77-15¢
July 7, 1869-Dated, United States Postal Cover Mailed From San Francisco, CAL. with Integral Letter (in French) to Paris / Calais France, Scott #77 - 15¢ Stamp tied with Fancy Cancel, Sent by Steamer Ship, Very Fine.
This original Handwritten Letter to France measures 10.5” x 8.25”, 4 pages, San Francisco, CA. This letter sent from San Francisco to France has a beautiful Scott’s #77-15¢ United States black Lincoln stamp issued in April 1866. Exceptionally clear black round postal cancel from San Francisco dated “JUL 8”, then red New York cancel “JUL 17”, blue Calais (France) cancel and black Paris cancel showing an arrival date of July 29th. The letter is not translated yet appears business related. Some scattered spots and ink erosion in the heavy portions. This boldly written Cover with a large “France” across the top right was apparently sent by express to New York in just 10 days and then by a Ship to the port of Calais and onto Paris. A better cover being mailed from San Francisco to Paris!
The United States 1869 Issue on Packet Mail to France, 1869-1871:
The United States postage stamps of 1869 were issued on March 19, 1869 (except for the 15¢ Type II, which was issued in April), and were superseded in March-April 1870 by the first Banknote Issue. Their short period of use makes them relatively hard to find on cover, particularly the 24¢, 30¢ and 90¢ values. The 90¢ value is not known on cover to France, so this exhibit displays all of the other ten values of the 1869 Issue on letters to France.
Postal relations between France and the United States were in great flux during 1869-1871.
The 1857 U.S.-France postal treaty expired on December 31, 1869, and this initiated a non-treaty period with a variety of route and rate combinations.
